A bill that would allow Iowa schools to offer classes about the Bible cleared another hurdle at the Statehouse on Tuesday.

Senate File 138 would let public schools offer classes that teach the Hebrew Scriptures of the New and Old Testament of the Bible. The bill would direct the Board of Education to create rules for these classes. School districts could then offer the courses in grades 9-12 if their school board allows it. Some lawmakers are backing this bill, while others argue it’s unconstitutional. The bill passed committee and now heads to the Senate floor for a vote.
